History Repeats Itself

Jeannette Landau was a force of nature. At ninety eight she was filled with a zest for life. She constantly told her Great Grandson Philip to make sure and live life to the fullest and to make sure that he made every second count.

Before Jeannette passed, Philip visited her with a tape recorder to discuss her life and things she had seen and done. The beginning of the story was incredibly wonderful. Jeannette had grown up with five brothers. Max, Jupe, Otto, Herman, and Philip. Philip was named after his Great Uncle. Grandma Jeannette had one sister, Rose.

The family was in the cattle and horse business. They bought and sold livestock. It was a popular profession for Jews in Germany. The family had been very successful and besides being livestock brokers had built and run their own abattoir.

The Landau family constantly helped their local community and bought the steeple that was put on the central church. Things were great until they weren’t.

Once the Nazis started getting power things changed dramatically. All of a sudden friends were no longer friends, first they became distant associates and then strangers. People hurled lies and insults at the local Jews and then moved to violence with complete impunity.
