The secret of life

Harold Solomon was an enigma wrapped in a mystery. Harold was single, fifty years old and he always seemed happy. He stood five foot nine, and had gray curly hair. He had hazel eyes that seemed to shine, and he always seemed to have a smile on his face.

There were two things nobody knew about Harold. What he did for his living and his sexual orientation. His neighbours were always saying that he was a great guy and a gentleman. The truth was they never really interacted with him for more than a few minutes.

Harold owned a nice, well kept house in North Oshawa, but he rarely had company over. Every Saturday morning, Harold would go to Synagogue and stay for the lunch after services.

People went around the dining table during lunch at the Synagogue saying things that were wise or otherwise. When it was Harold’s turn, it was always a quick few words, wishing everybody a good week and that was it.

Earnie Samuels the President of the Synagogue always invited Harold to join him and a few guys for poker on Saturday night. Harold always declined. Harold never told his reasons for not participating, but he just didn’t seem anxious to hang out in a group setting.

Rabbi Eli Bashevis invited Harold to join him and his family for Friday night…
