Eating Pizza was a favourite pastime of Josh Leibowitz. He worked hard at his job as a Home builder and he sometimes felt like he had an insatiable appetite. The only way to quench the emptiness in his stomach was pizza.

Josh never ate any of the crappy toppings, he avoided pepperoni and any kind of meat or chicken on top. He was not a fan of anchovies and always went for a limited number of items. His favourite pizza featured mushrooms, roasted vegetables and tomatoes.

The Pizza chains were okay but Josh always looked for craft pizzerias. He enjoyed…

I didn’t know Harold Bartell, the person whose headstone picture I used for this article. I only know you are born and eventually, you die. Nobody gets left behind. It’s how you live your life in between birth and death that counts.

Over the past few months, I’ve had a chance to reflect on the importance of living life to the fullest. My Sister Susie got very sick last year and there was a real chance we were going to lose her. Thank Gd she battled back and is fine now. There are still some lingering effects but she made…

The first day of University was completely and totally fun. Eddie Solomon found out his roommate in residence was an engineering student named Doug who had a problem. Doug didn’t really want to be at Carleton University. He had been working for a mining company and was making amazing money. He was conflicted as his parents wanted him to get an education but his heart wasn’t in it. He was seriously thinking about leaving school. He was going to give it a week and if he still felt like he was making the wrong move he would drop out. …

‘’Let’s be honest Hy, you let yourself go. You have put on a lot of weight. and it’s kind of embarrassing for me to be with you. During the pandemic I made a serious effort to work out, and it looks to me that you made a serious effort to eat.’’ The words stung. They were being said by Naomi Shvlitz, Hy’s girlfriend for the last four years.

The Pandemic did different things to people, and Hy thought that Naomi had become somewhat mean and bitter. They hadn’t seen each other for months in person (they facetimed on a regular…

Dominant Homes was thriving, the company couldn’t keep up with the demand they were facing for building new subdivisions. They’d throw up a sale’s trailer in some rural setting and all the houses to be built would be sold out in forty-eight hours.

Dominant was started by Philip Black and he and his brothers had turned it into a juggernaut. Over time Philip’s brothers sold their interests in the company to Philip for huge amounts of money and retired. As Philip (a Holocaust survivor) got older he passed management of the company on to his two sons and daughter. …

My friend Tonya was excited beyond words. ‘’Alan, we did it, we survived one of the worst pandemics in recent times. As a reward let’s go to a real-life lecture with real people. Henri LaTousse is going to be discussing the latest musical he wrote. It’s called ‘’Coventures’’ and it’s about how people survived and coped with the lockdown. I’ve read Henri’s stuff before and his lecture should be delightful. He is going to be proceeded by Three Rings which is an experimental band. Won’t that be a fun and normal night?’’ I thought about it and the truth was…

Harry Kravitz loved his family with his life. He would do anything for them, and that included his cousins. He was proud of the fact that his Mother’s family and his Father’s family kept in touch. When there was a Wedding, Bar Mitzvah, or Death everyone rallied around one another. The problem was things were changing.

In the Advertising world, people knew each other. Harry was a partner in the Ad Agency, ‘’Wilson, Gilmour, Kravitz’’ and he was always attending conferences and seminars. …

One of the first stories my Mom told me was about her brother Joe and how much he loved his Mother and Father and his sisters. He would do anything for them. They all grew up on Ulster Street in Toronto.

My Mom said growing up my Uncle Joe was very close with his first cousin Sammy Luftspring, a tremendous professional boxer. Uncle Joe went with Sammy to the majority of his fights and they were buddies. Uncle Joe was devastated when Sammy’s autobiography came out ‘’Call Me Sammy’’ and he wasn’t mentioned anywhere. He would express his hurt everytime…

Working for the Martindale Leventhal Veterinary Clinic meant that Dr. Eddie Leventhal was obliged to participate in the annual golf tournament that his clinic sponsored. Funds were raised to help Seniors who had pets and couldn’t afford vet bills if they ran into trouble. Over the past two years, the clinic had raised fifty thousand dollars, which was safely deposited into a trust account to help those in need.

The tournament was being played on a course known as Scenic Pines. It was considered one of the most impressive courses in the Toronto area. There were fifteen teams of four…

My friendship with Victoria Cesta started by accident at the Oasis Coffee Shop. Victoria was looking at her phone while attempting to drink a Latte and fell into my lap, getting her coffee all over my shirt. She looked puzzled. ‘’Uh, Geez, I didn’t see a table and chairs there. Did you just move them, because I doubt I would’ve missed seeing them. I feel really bad. Sorry about your shirt. You have a choice I can buy you a coffee or take your shirt back to my place, wash it, dry it and bring it back to you. …
